The management committee of Jiangsu Nanjing Eco Hi-tech Island Economic Development Zone, the Jiangsu Branch of China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG), and the Sino-Singapore Nanjing Eco Hi-tech Island Development Co Ltd recently signed astrategic cooperation agreement with the aim to launch a series of strategic cooperation in building the Singapore Nanjing Eco Hi-tech Island (SNEI) into a zero-carbon future city.

To SNEI, the strategic partnership with the CTG Jiangsu Branch marks the prelude to construction into zero-carbon future city.More relevant companies are expected to participate in the construction and jointly create a new model of sustainable green development in the Yangtze River Basin.

According to the agreement, the Jiangsu Branch of CTG will give full play to its own advantages, focus on clean energy development, energy consumption and saving, and transformation, and use capital and other resources as the links to explore new growth driving forces and seek more cooperation.

With the goal of building a“zero-carbon future city,” SNEI will help promote the deepening of such cooperation, creating a paradigm for central-local cooperation.

Promote the improvement of energy consumption structure

Relying on SNEI’s geographic advantages and ecological resource endowment, the project will implement distributed and decentralized new energy construction to promote the improvement of its energy consumption structure.

By 2028, the island aims to achieve an annual power generation of 10 million kilowatt-hours from clean energy sources, increase the proportion of clean energy for production and life, and make steady progress towards achieving peak carbon emissions and carbon neutrality.

Moreover, the construction of water source heat pump regional energy station projects will be explored and planned to provide stable centralized cooling and heating for commercial buildings, offices, residences, hotels, schools, hospitals and other buildings in the core area of the island, and further develop recycling and utilization of reclaimed water heat energy.

A renovation projecton the sinking sewage treatment plant will be promoted to advance the quality of the ecological environment on the island.

The CTG Jiangsu Branch will actively leverage its industrial advantages, fully tap into the green industry resources on the island,introduce new energy, investment and other related sectors and ecological circle enterprises, and support the agglomeration and development of new energy industries on SNEI.

Create a new model for becoming an international “zero-carbon future city”

Adhering to the concept of“ecology first and green development,” SNEI has a green coverage rate of more than 70 percent. It is also home to 100 percent green buildings and public transport shuttle busesas well as unmanned minibuses that are powered by new energy sources.

Recently, SNEI has revealed its development vision, bench marking against Singapore, striving to achieve peak carbon emissions by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2050, creating a new benchmark for the creation of an international “zero-carbon future city.”

The project will be implemented in two phases. From 2023 to 2030, it will focus on optimizing the energy structure, energy conservation and boosting efficiency. It will continuously increase the consumption proportion of electric power and green power supply in order to reach peak carbon emissions by 2030.

From 2031 to 2050, the energy structure will become more optimized, and a clean, low-carbon, safe, and efficient energy system will be established. The carbon neutrality goal will be achieved by 2050, by which time carbon dioxide emissions and carbon sinks will also be neutralized. Continuous efforts will be made to realize the transition from zero to negative carbon emissions.

The Jiangsu Branch of CTG was registered and established in Nanjing, East China’s Jiangsu province, on July 1, 2021. It is mainly responsible for the strategic implementation, industrial research, project investment and fulfillment of social responsibilities in Jiangsu province.It pushes forwardthe in-depth development of both clean energy and environmental protection in the Yangtze River, helping to build a new Jiangsu featuring a strong economy, affluent residents,a beautiful environment, and a high level of civility.
